Multiple responses of fine root resource uptake strategies to gravel content in a subtropical plantation

چکیده

Most forest soils contain substantial amounts of gravel. However, unlike the more widely known root resource uptake behaviors which respond to patches in substrate without gravels, how roots containing different gravel levels is poorly understood. We grew substrates with five (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% volume) a subtropical Schima superba Gardn. et Champ plantation, determined fine dynamics turnover rate minirhizotrons, measured morphological, architectural, mycorrhizal colonization, chemistry, mass allocation. The presence delayed timing peak growth. In higher content, plants produced autumn, but there were fewer summer tended exhibit lower biomass content was associated carbon/nitrogen ratio. Our findings emphasize complexity behavior response suggest that incorporating into studies may help improve prediction patch exploitation nutrient acquisition stony soils.

Fine root dynamics in a developing Populus deltoides plantation.

A closely spaced (1 x 1 m) cottonwood (Populus deltoides Bartr.) plantation was established to evaluate the effects of nutrient availability on fine root dynamics. Slow-release fertilizer (17:6:12 N,P,K plus micronutrients) was applied to 225-m(2) plots at 0, 50, 100 and 200 kg N ha(-1), and plots were monitored for two growing seasons. Fine root production, mortality, live root standing crop a...

Sugarcane responses to irrigation and nitrogen in subtropical Iran

Limited information is available on water and nitrogen (N) management of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) in Khuzestan, southwestern Iran, where this crop is currently and extensively grown under heavy irrigation and N fertilization. Therefore, a field experiment was conducted from September 2000 to March 2002 at the Research Department of Karoon Agro-industry in Khuzestan to determine the ...

Early Stage Fine-Root Decomposition and Its Relationship with Root Order and Soil Depth in a Larix gmelinii Plantation

Characterization of decomposition dynamics of fine roots is essential for understanding vegetation–soil feedbacks and predicting ecosystem responses to future climate scenarios, given their more rapid turnover rates. Using a branch-order classification, we separated the fine root systems of Larix gmelinii into two classes: firstand second-order roots combined into one (lower-order); thirdand fo...

Stimulated fine root growth benefits maize nutrient uptake under optimized nitrogen management

Optimized nitrogen (N) management reduces total N application without sacrificing cropyield. However, the underlining mechanisms have not been well investigated, especially lackingthe evidence from roots. Here we performed a two-year field experiment with maize grownunder zero-N, conventional N and optimized N applications and examined grain yield, N,phosphorous (P) and potassium (K) uptake and...
